KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Monarchs (6-3) got their home opening series win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (3-7) this weekend.
Ashton Goudeau took the mound in game one. Goudeau threw five innings for four hits and one run. Ashton joined the team with a few weeks left in the regular season last year and has pitched in eight games in his time with the Monarchs. His AA career record is 6-1 with an ERA of 1.65.
KC fell behind after an home run from Winnipeg catcher Rob Emery in the top of the 4th inning. Josh Bissonette got the line moving with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Following, Travis Swaggerty brings in Bissonette, Cannon brings in Swaggerty. In the 8th inning, cleanup batter Blake Rutherford hits a 3-run home run to drive in Swaggerty, and Bissonette to secure the win. The Monarchs won 6-1.
Game two ended in the Goldeyes favor, a 6-4 win. The monarchs had a solid 1st inning, bringing in 3 runs and going through almost there entire lineup. Cameron Cannon gets his first home run of the season in the form of a 3-run homer. The Monarchs last run cam in the for 4th inning off a RBI single by lead off batter Ross Adolph. The first loss at home for the Monarchs.
A 5-3 win gets Kansas City back on track, scoring 5 runs from the first four batters (Adolph, Bissonette, Swaggerty, and Rutherford) off 9 hits.
Blake Rutherford, who has been the cleanup hitter for the monarchs the entirety of the season so far, hit a two-run home run in the 1st. Down four runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, the Monarchs rally to score 8 unanswered points to win the game. Travis Swaggerty started the trend with an RBI single to drive in Ross Adolph. Frankie Tostado got a 2-run home run to get two more guys to touch home plate in the 6th. Hayden Jones got his first home run of the season in the bottom of the 8th inning.
