Minnesota Triumphs 3-1 Over Kansas City; Russell’s Late Goal Avoids Shutout

ST. PAUL – Sporting Kansas City(2-5-9; 11pts) fell to Minnesota United (8-4-3; 28pts) in a 3-1 result on Saturday night at Allianz Field. A late goal from substitute forward Johnny Russell kept SKC out of a 3-0 shutout.

Three goals from the Loons coming in the 33′ (Tani Oluwaseyi), 67′ (Robin Lod), and 83′ (Kervin Arriaga) to help Minnesota to advance to the number two spot in the Western Conference standings, immediately following the match.

Manager Peter Vermes was asked about the conversation with the front office regarding the security of his job, “You’ll have to ask them that.” This is the 7th loss in a row for Sporting, they have gone winless in the last 10 matches (0-2-8), the longest active streak in MLS. SKC is 2 games behind where they were last year to make it to decision day and beat out Minnesota United in the opposite result of tonight, a 3-1 win.

Team captain and forward Johnny Russell scored for Kansas City in the 86′ to keep Sporting out of a shutout. A a strong, effortless goal for the captain, 23 yards from the goal to put SKC in the box score. Russell breaks his tie for second with Dom Dwyer on Sporting’s all-time regular season goal scoring chart.

Sporting Kansas City will have a week of rest before taking on the Seattle Sounders next Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park.
