Kansas football faced off against Texas Christian University on Saturday in a 38-27 loss at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Despite putting 27 points on the board in four frames of football, Kansas yet again failed to take the W for the fourth time in a row.
Kansas’ offense is a big red flag, with Jalon Daniels throwing eight interceptions in the first five games and only five touchdowns with just over 800 total yards. Yes, there were some bad offensive penalties for the team from Lawrence, but more importantly, Kansas‘s defense was just as or even worse than the offense yesterday. Allowing 38 points and a very lackluster effort from all 11 guys on the field.
Miscommunication from the defensive backs was a big factor in the game. Crisscrossing coverages, running into each other, failing to stop the short pass, run, and long balls made the biggest impact in the overall lackluster performance.
A few big things happened that are worth noting. Luke Grimm was able to get 2 feet in bounds after a pass from Jalon Daniels to the near side of the field. Devin Neal was able to navigate through traffic to get his 4th touchdown of the season. Kansas was also able to have a short scoring drive of just 4 plays in a little over 2 minutes that ended in the Luke Grimm catch.
What’s next for Kansas?
I would say make Cole Ballard the starter. He has shown in the 3 games that he has played in that he can step up when needed. Jason Bean went down with an injury last year, and he had to step up. Cole started in one of the two games he played last season. That game, the 121st Sunflower Showdown. 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions in 16 pass attempts, Ballard also carried 10 times for 55 yards.
The Kansas offensive is a much more pass-oriented scheme with the chance in offensive coordinator to Jeff Grimes, who came from Baylor after former OC Andy Kotelnicki got a new opportunity at Penn State.
Kansas next heads to Arizona State to take on the Sun Devils in a primetime matchup on ESPN2.
