KANSAS CITY – UNLV heads to Kansas City, Kansas to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a Guaranteed Rate Bowl rematch. The rematch will show in prime time on mainstream ESPN.
Jason Bean, former Kansas Jayhawks quarterback lead Kansas to a 49-36 win, amassing 449 yards and a whopping 6 touchdown passes. Seniors Luke Grimm and Lawrence Arnold catching the combined 6 touchdowns for a combined 292 yards. With Bean heading for the NFL, now practice squad quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, Jalon Daniels will take over behind the line of scrimmage.
Daniels has a great outing thus far in the season. In just 2 games, Jalon has thrown 289 yards for 3 touchdowns. Granted, Lance Lipoild pulled the starters in the second half of the game against Lindenwood.
Players to watch
As with every game, senior running back Devin Neal is always making a huge impact on the field. Most notably in the game against Oklahoma state at home in 2022, rushing for 224 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown in that game. Neal always makes an impact, no matter the game or opponent. This season, he has already rushed for 213 yards on 22 carries and a pair of touchdowns. An average 14 yards per rush in the home opener at the end of August, with his longest at 53 yards in the same game.
Jalon Daniels will make his 3rd start of the season on Friday, making it his 28th all time collegiate game. The Heisman contending quarterback has not had the best start to the season, throwing 4 interceptions in the first two games and throwing 3 touchdowns for 289 yards, with an average completion percentage of 57.4%. Jalon Daniels is not the player he was before his injury last season. Compared to his 74.7% completion percentage last season, Jalon is not as accurate of a player as he was, without the back tightness issues.
Ricky White III on the UNLV side of the ball is also a big watch for this primetime matchup. Scoring 3 touchdowns in the first quarter for UNLV in their game against Utah Tech last Saturday. An average 22.2 yards per reception on 5 receptions in that game is an impressive stat. Having 16 collegiate career touchdowns in 31 games, White is a touchdown machine as of late and certainly a player to watch out for.
Cobee Bryant for the Jayhawks defense has been lethal for this team, coming up with 9 interceptions in his career and 4 taken back to the house. 94 tackles for the cornerback and 1.5 sacks, Bryant is a big time playmaker.
Kansas holds the all-time matchup record at 2-1 with the first and only loss coming in 2002 with a 31-20 loss in Las Vegas.
The ESPN broadcast is lead by play-by-play caller Anish Shroff and the action will start at 6pm central time at Children’s Mercy Park. Few tickets remain for this rematch, and can be found on SeatGeek.
