My 3 Things: Chiefs Records That Could Be Broken THIS Year

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the NFL, yet some of the more tenured members are looking to achieve milestones over the next couple of seasons. Some franchise records might even be broken in this upcoming season. Here are my three records that could be shattered this year:

1: Most Passing Yards in a Season
While Peyton Manning’s 2013 campaign saw him total 5,477 yards, which might be slightly out of reach, Patrick Mahomes own single-season record for passing yards might be attainable at 5,250. The Chiefs have added new weapons at Wide Receiver this year, bringing in Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown and drafting a speedster in Xavier Worthy. These are the first true speed weapons Patrick Mahomes has had since his early days with Tyreek Hill, and it seems like, if they can catch the ball, those legs will carry them a little farther than past Chiefs’ receivers giving Mahomes a shot at this record. However, if Mahomes gets hot with his shiny new toys, there is no end to the records they could break, including NFL ones.

    2: Taking Tony’s Place
Sitting in third place in this category is Dwayne Bowe with 532 receptions during his time with the Chiefs. The top two? Two of the greatest ever to play the position – Travis Kelce (907) and Tony Gonzalez (916). Kelce’s nine reception deficit makes this record almost a lock for him, but it also shows the talent that he is as he begins to pass one of the greatest tight ends ever in Gonzalez. The Chiefs opener, if Kelce stays healthy, will be his 160th game and if he manages to break the record in a quick fashion, he will do it thirty games faster than Gonzalez did with 190. Kelce is also two shy of the Chiefs’ touchdown reception record trailing Gonzalez 76-74. Just a year shy of taking over the record for most receiving yards in Chiefs history, Kelce is so close to cementing his legacy even further.

3: A Fifth Ring for the Trophy Case
If the Chiefs truly complete the trifecta not only would that break plenty of records and add to many record pursuits, but it would also cement the Kansas City Chiefs franchise among the best. Only four teams have ever won five or more championships with the 49ers and Cowboys at five and the Patriots and Steelers with a league-leading six. If Andy Reid can coach another ring onto his finger it would bring him closer to Bill Belichick’s record as well as many of the other core pieces of the Mahomes era – Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, etc. putting even a larger footprint on NFL history.

5 Takeaways From UNLV at Kansas

Kansas’ 2024 non-conference season ends with a 1-2 record, with a strong start and a fumble recovery that could have led to a win. Despite a strong defense, the offense struggled to produce, with only two touchdowns and a field goal. Jalon Daniels’ six interceptions this season are a career high, highlighting the need for improvement.
