The Kansas City Current face off against their first international opponent on Saturday, July 27. This opponent is Pachuca Femenil out of the Liga MX Femenil. This competition is part of the “NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup.” This is the Current’s second game in this competition following a win last week against the Houston Dash.
Pachuca’s women’s team originated in 2017 alongside the start of the Liga MX Femenil. Since 2017, Pachuca has yet to win a championship in their domestic league. They finished in second place last year, however. Pachuca lost their first group game last week to Tigres UANL. Tigres historically has been better than Pachuca in league play but that doesn’t mean much to the Current until after tomorrow’s game.
The Current has shown how much depth they have on the roster all season. They have managed injuries very well. It seems like it’s virtually unnoticeable whenever a player is replaced in the lineup or in a game. The Current have two players participating in the Olympics currently. So, they will not be available for Saturday’s game. Lauren is playing with Brazil and Nichelle Prince is with Canada. Alongside the players with international duties, the Current have a few other injuries but almost all of their star players are good to go.
Fans can expect players like Temwa Chawinga and Debinha to be making large impacts in the game Saturday. The whole team responded extremely well after taking their first loss of the season to Orlando a few weeks back. They then had a good amount of time to rest, reset, and get ready to attack this new challenge in the summer cup. This was shown in their convincing victory in the first group game against Houston, where KC won 3-1.
Sophie Braun would have been a player to watch for as she had experience playing in the Liga MX Femenil but, The Current put her on loan to USL Super League team, Spokane Zephyr FC just one week ago.
This game will be exciting to watch the two styles of teams face off. It will also give soccer fans an idea of where the NWSL stands as a league. The game kicks off at 7 PM on Paramount Plus at CPKC Stadium.
