Sporting Kansas City vs. Philadelphia Union

KANSAS CITY – The Philadelphia Union traveled to Kansas City to take on Sporting in their home opener. KC won in almost all facets of the box score, leading in shots on goal, possession time, pass accuracy, etc. Yet, they did not win in the most important category, goals. Philadelphia created a 95th minute finish to cap off a lackluster offensive night for both teams.

Sporting Kansas City was able to get on the board early when Alan Pulido shot past Philly keeper Oliver Semmle in the 11th minute, but it was waved away as Erik Thommy was offside.

SKC got their revenge eight minutes later when Remi Walter took advantage of a mistake committed by Jose Martinez. Walter fired it past Semmle giving Sporting a 1-0 lead over Philadelphia.

Kansas City’s defense was electric during the entirety of the 1st half and really for the majority of the ninety minutes. In the first half SKC outshot the Union 6-0. However that came to that end, and the struggles came at the worst time, coming in the stoppage time.

Initially, there were four minutes of stoppage time allotted, but when Philadelphia forced a corner kick as the time was expiring, one more minute was given for the opportunity of a Union miracle.

They took advantage of their last opportunity.
